Welcome to First Grade...

First Six Weeks Skills:

Reading –

Students will

Demonstrate knowledge of concepts of print

Orally demonstrate phonological  awareness

Use letter-sound knowledge to decode written language; learn and apply letter-sound correspondences of a set of consonants and vowels

Use a variety of word identification strategies

Read with fluency and understanding in texts at appropriate difficulty levels

Read widely for different purposes in varied sources

Use a variety of strategies to comprehend selections read aloud and selections read independently

Students must be reading at a level 4 by the end of the 1st six weeks to be considered reading “on level”.  I will share the results of the reading assessment at our first parent-teacher conference in October.  The assessments will begin in 2 weeks.

Writing:-

Students will

Write his/her own name and words on the word wall correctly

Write each letter of the alphabet, both capital and lowercase using the correct formation, appropriate size and spacing.

Write messages that move left to right and top to bottom on the page

Gain an increasing control of penmanship

Use word and letter spacing and margins to make messages readable

Math-

Students will

Know that the calendar is a tool to tell time of year

Understand that the position of digits determines the value of the number

Understand that 2 digit numbers can be viewed in terms of tens and ones

Use comparative language, such as greater than, less than or equal to.

Use a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems.

Create and make predictions using patterns

Learn the names of 2 dimensional geometric figures and identify them by their attributes

Science/Social Studies

Students will

Investigate weather

Learn about interacting with others and the need for rules

Good citizenship
